Words like energy crisis and ENRON have become general knowledge words and terms. One of the top issues this year has been oil and the increasingly high prices. No one knows who to blame or how to fix, but few have the power to actually affect it. Energy trades buy and sell energy resources. They also research and study the current energy needs and availability to know best how to address the important issues.

Energy trading is a fairly new career and is o a booming rise as far as job opportunities. Like many finance jobs they require some experience before a major position is available. A common work place for business graduates is in oil companies learning and working with the product management departments. Either an experience in energy or trading will help you start an energy trading career. It is also a good opportunity to get a job at an energy firm which is booming right now. Since the fall of ENRON energy firms have created a new name for big company energy trades. This will allow you to start small and learn the job skills that will make you a success in this career.

This job isn’t your usual business job requiring data crunching and trading deals. You have to be aware of anything that might affect the resource demand and supply. For example, the weather will have an impact on oil prices, food imports, natural gas production and more. These are all things that you have to recognize and compensate for. If you can recognize it before it happens then you can out maneuver the competitors and make more money. This career has a lot of strategy to it and it’s important to maintain the upper hand of business while making these important decisions.

All that is required to get a start in this field is a bachelor’s degree. However, there are several universities that offer specialized certification courses designed specifically for a career in energy trading. These courses will not only potentially increase your salary but will give you advanced training to perform better within the trading community. Along with these courses there are also some online courses that will teach you more about the trading world and how to get started professionally. Your trading area is specialized and your focus will only be on natural resources and electricity markets. The job outlook for energy trading is surprisingly good. It is expected to keep rising and more jobs becoming abundant through out the country. Right now the energy trading hub is in New York City. The starting salary for this career is also very high. Most trader jobs will start at $85,000 and have the potential to increase to over $133,000. The average salary though is somewhere between $92,000 and $118,000 in the U.S. Most jobs with trading firms will offer benefits but it is still a good thing to check out before hiring on.

This career also has opportunities world wide. In country positions dealing with trades between the U.S. are common in energy trading firms. It is a wonderful opportunity to earn lots of money and experience a new culture first hand. This has an added level of difficulty because you are now responsible for watching the U.S. market as well as the country you are dealing with. If one thing affects trades in a foreign country they can have a large effect on the stock in the U.S. If you know a language other than English make sure to put that on your resume because it might help your chances of being hired. Any unique talent or skill is worth mentioning when applying to trading jobs.
