Trades Technician Supervisor I - HVAC




The purpose of the class is to direct, supervise and assist work crews in maintenance and repairs. The class is responsible for assigned area of responsibility. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.



Classification typically supervises.

Example of Duties:

The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Trades Technician Supervisor I. The incumbent is responsible for providing supervision of assigned staff and performing scheduled inspections as well as planning, scheduling, and performing preventative maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration equipment.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Reviewing and assigning all work orders from the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)

Overseeing the installation, maintenance and repairs of various HVAC and temperature control systems, such as boilers, heat pumps. RTUs, air handlers, chilled water and hot water systems

Planning, assigning, inspecting, and supervisingmaintenance, repair construction activities and maintaining associated records, files, and prepared reports

Assigning and distributing work orders and work requests

Check and troubleshoot equipment, setting and adjusting accordingly

Working with staff to monitor HVAC equipment on Building Automation Systems (BAS)

Providing technical assistance to mechanics

Purchasing and tracking all supplies for the HVAC supply storage room

Developing and establishing organizational goals and objectives

Facilitating training on equipment to employees

Reviewing and assisting time sheets, codes and overtime

Preparing the selection files for employee hiring

Communicating, directing, and inspecting service work of contractors on mechanical repairs

Assisting in budget planning and preparation of mechanical systems conditions for fiscal budget forecasting

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses:

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires high school diploma or GED and training that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training

Requires two (2) years of experience

An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

Requires a current and valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:

Comprehensive knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in installing, repairing, and maintaining refrigeration and air handling equipment

Comprehensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work ability to exercise good independent judgment in determining operating conditions

Ability to plan, supervise, and inspect the work of subordinates

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates

Knowledge of energy management systems

Experience supervising a staff of five (5) or more employees

Possession of a Journeyman's or Master's License for HVAC by the Commonwealth of Virginia is highly preferred

Current and valid Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Universal Refrigerant Recovery certification (Types I, II, and III) highly preferred
