Job Details:
Under the guidance of the Director of Clinical Nutrition, the Community Food Manager develops, implements, and evaluates operations for the Food Pharmacy, Food Demonstration Kitchen, and community-facing projects involving food justice issues such as food insecurity, food access, and childhood obesity. Demonstrates an understanding of the complexities of community engagement, population health, and organizational dynamics. Applies appropriate terminology for describing population-based nutrition interventions.

Fluent in cultural competency skills and speaks collaboratively with and listens to all audiences, including children, adults lower level education attainment, students, physicians, and community leaders. Manages the budget of all operations, maintaining focus on the differences between donations, grants, and hospital funds.

In collaboration with Director of Clinical Nutrition, develops, implements, and evaluates plans for quality indicators, outcomes, and scope of services for areas of operation. Demonstrates systems-thinking by prioritizing consensus-building and conflict resolution in all interactions while also managing projects and operations according to plans and regulations.

Community Capacity Building - 20%

  • Strives to build and maintain collaborative relationships with community leaders, advocates, and workers associated with practices consistent with this position.
  • Provides nutrition expertise to community partners and speaks effectively about associated hospital operations.
  • Develops, implements, and manages programs and initiatives which result in Dayton Children’s engagement in addressing food insecurity and associated childhood obesity.
  • Works collaboratively with area organizations addressing food insecurity and associated childhood obesity. Accepts opportunities to provide expertise to their operations which impact children and their family units
  • Understands and practices according to the complexities of community engagement processes
  • Builds and implements plan to maximize the use of the food pharmacy and food demonstration kitchen for children and their families receiving care at Dayton Children’s Hospital.
  • Ensures Dayton Children’s is an active partner in area discussions and initiatives involving food justice for children.
  • Assess community needs and plan, execute, and evaluate interventions on at least a two-year cycle.

Leadership - 20%

Mobilize community partnerships and action to identify and solve food justice issues. Develop policies, procedures, and plans that support individual and community health efforts. Research for new insights and innovative solutions to food justice issues. Supports director in developing strategic goals by gathering data, identifying and evaluating trends and options, choosing a course of action, and evaluating outcomes. Builds trusting collaborative relationships with staff, peers, physicians, and other leaders. Demonstrates and mentors systems-thinking through all interactions and decisions, particularly with quality assurance/process improvement projects. Models and mentors open communication, process simplification, job ownership, and innovative idea generation. Leads resolution of community-based nutrition issues involving the hospital. Models and encourages flexibility and time management skills to meet immediate and long-term needs. Contributes to an environment that is conducive to learning and changing as needed. Serves as a mentor and role model to employees and customers Functions as a change agent Facilitates effective problem solving Demonstrates flexibility by adapting to new, different, or changing environments.

Management - 40%

  • Plans, implements, and manages the daily operations of Dayton Children’s food pharmacy and food demonstration kitchen. Includes determining appropriate requests for use in the kitchen and incorporating broad audiences.
  • Maintains policies and procedures consistent with appropriate departmental, building, and hospital vision, mission, and goals.
  • Ensures compliance with appropriate regulations including Ohio Department of Health
  • Leads the direction of interdisciplinary hospital initiatives associated with food insecurity.
  • Manages the budget for both the pharmacy and demonstration kitchen, including separately tracking funds and resources obtained through donations, grants, and the hospital.
  • Maintains safe and efficient operations by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees and students who help with projects.
  • Identifies and conducts safety audits.
  • Leads internal efforts to identify and address food insecurity, including educating providers and employees.

Regulatory Compliance, Safety, and Risk Management - 20%

Identifies, leads, participates in, encourages and/or monitors community-based, nutrition-related quality assurance and process improvement projects. Understands, articulates, and ensures compliance with Dayton Childrens standards and state/national/federal regulatory agency requirements, assuring that ongoing compliance occurs in assigned areas of responsibility. Coordinates provision of quality improvement in areas of responsibility with other department operations. Stays abreast of current safety regulations and guidelines associated with operations. Provides rapid response to any identified safety concerns and issues. Uses effective techniques to improve efficiency of operations such as project management and process mapping.

Performs other duties as assigned.
