FS includes eight departments that operate, maintain and support the University: Administration & Strategic Initiatives (AVP), Building Services Department (BSD), Campus Engineering & Operations (CE&O), Facilities Employee Services (FES), Facilities Maintenance & Construction (FMC), Finance and Business Services (FABS), Transportations Services (TS), and UW Emergency Management (EM). Facilities Maintenance & Construction (FMC) is responsible for general maintenance, repair and renovations of all University of Washington (UW) main campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors and grounds. We have an outstanding opportunity for a Trades Helper . Duties & Responsibilities: Perform semiskilled work in maintenance and construction under the direction of the supervisor and lead, assisting journey-level trades workers. Have knowledge of common materials used by the trade. Obtain, prepare and deliver materials to the job site for installation by journey workers. Clean up, service and operate a variety of hand and power tools. Assist in shop office routines, including material storage and recordkeeping. Set up and work from a variety of ladders and scaffolding. Clean up and maintain shop areas, work sites and storage areas. Assist journey electricians in pulling wire, hanging fixtures, cutting and threading conduit. Take electrical meter readings. Clean up and wash light fixtures. Cut and prepare metal shapes for use in hanging electrical devices. Operate hand and portable tools, including drill motors, metal cutting equipment and power hammer. Operate machinery such as fork-lifts and scissor-lifts. Operate vehicles such as University vans and trucks to transport tools and equipment to various worksites. Load and unload materials and supplies. Communicate and collaborate with other Facilities Services shops to facilitate work. Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations specific to the work actions and conduct on the job, including Safety Data Sheet (SDS), Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. Comply with all UW and Facilities Services policies and procedures, FMC protocols, i.e. Individual Accountability Protocols (IAP). Support all management directives and the vision and values of FMC. Participate in and follow through with FMC process improvement initiatives, including Balanced Scorecard (BSC), incorporating metrics and Lean principles into internal work processes, and promoting employee engagement in continuous improvements and innovation. Actively participate in meetings and training as scheduled. Provide excellent customer service through effective, courteous and professional interactions with clients, colleagues and the campus community. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements include: High school graduation or GED certificate; AND six months\u2019 general work experience requiring use of trades tools at the unskilled level. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license. Additional requirements include: Demonstrated successful ability in taking direction, working well with others and as a member of a team. Demonstrated excellent effective verbal and written communication skills. Equivalent education\/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license\/certification\/registration. Desired: Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Act) regulations. Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products Experience in electrical work: assisting journey-level electricians in pulling wire, hanging fixtures, cutting and threading conduit; replacing incandescent lamps and fluorescent tubes in a wide variety of lighting fixtures throughout the campus; taking electrical meter readings; cleaning up and washing light fixtures; cutting and preparing metal shapes for use in hanging electrical devices; operating hand and portable tools, including drill motors, metal cutting equipment and power hammer. Experience in sheet metal work: handling and placing sheet metal roofing materials; using common shop instruments, including rules and micrometers, cutting, grinding and polishing sheet metal materials; operating power shop equipment, including drill press and punch press; operating the sand blaster; making minor assemblies of preformed sheet metal components including installation of fasteners. Conditions of Employment: Possession of a valid Washington State Driver\u2019s License or a license recognized as valid by the State of Washington. Regular and predictable attendance is required. May be required to accept variable work shift. Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions. Must be able to work in a smoke-free environment. Ability to lift and move heavy material may be required. Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions. Approved footwear must be provided at the employee\u2019s expense and worn on the job. Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job. Must participate in medical screening\/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in locations, including but not limited to, nonhuman primate areas, the Animal Research and Care Facility, and the University of Washington Medical Center.
